Viseu is a city made for you that is worth discovering.
Start at Rossio, a wide square in the city centre with impressive lime trees and a tile panel. Head towards the historic centre up to the gates of the city's medieval walls, the Porta do Soar or Arco dos Melos. Go to Adro da Sé, one of the most beautiful squares in Portugal and admire the buildings around it.
Plan a visit to the upper cloister of the Cathedral and enter the Museum of Sacred Art, which displays pieces from the Cathedral's treasure. Another impressive granite building is the Grão Vasco Museum, where you can appreciate a unique exhibition of the history of Portuguese painting.
In front of the Cathedral, the elegant and white "rocaille" façade of the Church of Mercy (18th century) interrupts with a touch of lightness the solemnity of the granite that dominates the square.
At a crossroads of streets you will find a house of fifteenth-century origin with traces of the first synagogue of Viseu's Jewish quarter that will leave you very close to the old House of the Viscountess of Treixedo (16th to 18th centuries).
Complete your walk by reaching the well-known Rua das Tendas and go back to medieval times appreciating the details of the ground floor shops where commercial tradition continues to our days.
